PORT PHILLIP ECO CENTRE
The Eco Centre is a not-for-profit, community managed, environmental group, providing a base for affliate groups involved in activities that promote biodiversity, environmental sustainability and community action.
Urgent action is required to protect hollow bearing trees wherever possible. Nest boxes are needed in areas where hollows have already been lost. There are approximately 70 species of bats in Australia, with 43 species identified as being locally or nationally threatened. Thirty-five of these threatened species are micro bats.
We set out to design an interactive e-pub with the intention to educate the community and encourage them to contribute in the conservation of micro bat habitats, our key focus designing towards primary students. The e-pubs main aim is to serve as an instructional video demo of how to build a micro bat nest box, stimulating positive environmental action within the community.
We successfully created a user friendly e-pub titled the Bat Box Project that can be accessed via iBook or online. The e-pub has been designed with an illustrative component and animated features to engage primary students.
The Bat Box Project also includes additional features and activities such as; videos of Eco Centre Youth Ambassador Geo Fitzpatrick, and the DIY Bat Sock, a craft activity designed for the younger audiences that inspires students to use creativity with sustainability.
The E-pub will be accessible to anyone via the Eco Centres website to empower the community, in taking action towards the furnishing of habitats for the threatened species micro bats.
